Setting up a DIY ice bath using a chest freezer is a game-changer — but keeping your water crystal clear for months is what makes the difference between a one-off plunge and a long-term wellness ritual.
This is my proven Water Longevity Protocol that works especially well for chest freezer to ice bath conversions, using a blend of manual maintenance and my Water Filtration & Ozone Sanitation Kits.
Disclaimer & Safety First
While I’m fully insured, certified, accredited, and experienced, your safety is your responsibility.
Always unplug your chest freezer and all components before servicing or plunging.

3-Stage Ice Bath Water Maintenance Protocol
This protocol applies to both my setup and many other DIY or commercial cold plunge tubs. I break it down into three clear stages:
1. Pre-Plunge Prep
Goal: Enter clean, leave clean.
-
Take a hot shower beforehand to open pores and remove sweat, oils, creams, and grime. Contrast therapy is a great bonus here.
-
Set up a foot dip tray and towel near your chest freezer bath to prevent dirt or grass entering the water.
-
Double check that everything is switched off and unplugged before getting in.
2. Post-Plunge Reset
Goal: Quick tidy and sanitize to keep water fresh.
-
Use a scoop net to remove visible debris (including hair, leaves, etc).
-
Wipe any spillage around the lid or outer edges.
-
Turn your pump back on for filtration.
-
Run your ozone generator for 30 minutes to naturally sanitize the water.
This combination helps prevent bacterial growth and cloudy water without using chlorine or harsh chemicals.
3. Weekly (or Fortnightly) Maintenance
Goal: Deep clean and refresh with minimal water loss.
Gravity Siphon Technique:
For heavier debris that the pump can’t reach:
-
Grab a 2-meter length of clear tube (from the garden section at Bunnings).
-
Fully submerge it to remove all air bubbles.
-
Cover one end with your thumb underwater, lift it out, and lower it to a lower point (bucket or garden bed).
-
Release your thumb and use the siphon to vacuum the floor of your plunge.
Internal Clean:
-
Use a microfiber cloth or rag to wipe down the inner walls and floor to prevent algae build-up.
Water Top-Up:
-
Remove a few extra buckets of water and use it in your garden.
-
Top back up with fresh filtered or rainwater — this refreshes your plunge without needing a full water change.
Pump Clean:
-
Remove the pump and soak it in warm water with pure tea tree, eucalyptus, or lavender essential oils.
-
Pull out the propeller and remove any hair or debris jammed inside.
-
Repeat the soak-and-scrub until clean.
-
For convenience, use drop-out cartridges from my website to swap filters quickly and carry on with your day.
